Statement: Supported by the City of Toronto through the Toronto Arts Council, Joelle is the second part of my 'Diabetes Perspectives' project. It follows Joelle Madill, a Type-1 Diabetic living in Moose Factory First Nations, a semi-isolated community located just below the arctic tundra line in Northern Ontario in Canada. Living everyday life in such a remote, sparsely populated region brings new challenges to diabetes care. Health care facilities are few, meaning diabetics must travel great distances to obtain services unavailable in their local communities - putting pressure on the already weak system. In addition, with no roads into these areas, basic fresh produce such as milk, bread and fruits and vegetables are flown in on passenger flights, increasing prices and rendering supply inconsistent making it extremely arduous and expensive for diabetics in remote areas to manage their illness.
